Why I sold my house (and choose to rent)

10/17/25 - Friday

Hey Friends,

Jill here. I’ve got some big news and thoughts to share about housing - because for most of us it’s our biggest monthly expense!

But first…

Our favorite cash back site Rakuten has upped its new user bonus to $50! The highest we’ve EVER seen. We cannot let you miss this offer. Here’s how to get yours:

  • Sign up for Rakuten using this link. ** (Must be a new user/email address)

  • Make a qualifying purchase of at least $50 (or a few totalling $50) within 90 days of sign up (helloooo Christmas shopping!)

A "Qualifying Purchase" means a purchase that earns Cash Back or points through Rakuten, and you have over 3500 stores to choose from, so it shouldn’t be hard! Some of our favorites are Groupon, Sam’s Club, and PetSmart.

So don’t wait! Get $50 worth of grocery or holiday shopping covered by Rakuten!

Now back to my big news!

Making the decision to buy, rent, or even sell is one of the most important financial decisions you’ll ever make.

But here’s the thing: the “right” choice isn’t the same for everyone. A house that feels like financial freedom to one person can feel like a burden to someone else.

Renting might be a temporary stepping stone… or a long-term strategy. And selling a home (even one you love) can sometimes be the smartest money move of all.

I know, because that’s exactly what I did. I sold my house (by choice!) and went back to renting.

The numbers, the lifestyle shifts, and the trade-offs that led me there might surprise you.

I share the full story, what I gained, what I gave up, and how I knew it was the right move, in our latest episode. You can watch it here. 👇🏼

If you’re weighing this decision yourself, here are a few questions to consider:

  • What’s my all-in cost? For those who own or are looking to buy - recognize that your mortgage is only part of your monthly housing expenses. Taxes, insurance, and repairs can add hundreds every month.
What do I actually value right now? Stability, control, autonomy? Or flexibility, freedom, low-maintenance?
What trade-offs am I willing to make? Owning ties up cash and time, renting means less autonomy. Both can be worth it depending on your season of life.

If I free up the money and time tied to this house, what would I do with it instead?

Selling isn’t just about what you’re leaving behind—it’s about what you’re making space for, whether that’s investing differently, reducing stress, or pursuing new opportunities.

Curious what tipped the scales for me?

Your home is a place to live, not a life sentence. The “right” choice is the one that serves you.

Speaking of serving you…
