Hey there my Friday Frands!

Have you ever picked up a self-help book, made it through 3 chapters, felt like you got the gist of it, but then had trouble implementing 100% or seeing real change?

I have 🙋

I’ve found that most self-help books, especially the ones about personal finance, pretty much say the same thing: if you simply do this, this, this, this, this, that, and that, you’re guaranteed to reach ‘xyz’ outcome (financial freedom, peace, justice, you name it!).

Just don’t deviate from any of the rules.

Granted when you’re starting your financial journey, having rules is great, but following someone else’s rules for your whole life is unrealistic.

Eventually, you need to take what you’ve learned and create your own rules.

Instead of throwing the baby out with the bath water, learn to hold the tension between what the experts say and what works for you.

Try this instead:

  • 1 part favorite financial self-help book

  • 1 part YOUR core values

  • 2 parts understanding your current life season and capacities

  • a dash of the Frugal Friends Podcast 😉

Yield a guilt-free values-based spending plan that WORKS!

And give yourself permission to take what works for you and leave behind the rest.

Check out Tuesday’s episode where we outline How to Get Self-Care & Healthcare Treatments For Free or Low Cost. There are ways to get all the goods without the gold.

In today’s episode, we dive into another original from Jen and I: How to Adopt a Frugal Mindset. It's full of our unadulterated perspective on what it takes to shift our thinking and live from a place of wise stewardship of resources.

Tune in wherever you get podcasts and let us know what you thought of the episode over on our latest Instagram post!

Jill’s picks for a stellar weekend.

Watch This: Bees - Living for the Queen - Go Wild. I (Jill) have a fascination with honey bees and this is one that has some stunning facts about these amazing creatures. 🐝

Listen to This: Chill Instrumental for Work + Study playlist. This is a good one for all that journaling and self-pondering you will do this weekend (as an alternative to trying to implement the tips in the self-help book perfectly) 😜

Read This: What is “Enough” is a refreshing article from HerMoney on the integration of emotional well-being and financial health. Subscribe to the HerMoney Newsletter to receive more actionable and personable finance tips (hold the mansplaining, please).

Do this: Eat oranges 🍊 and chocolate 🍫. They’re a great pairing and in honor of International Chocolate Day this week (Sept. 13th), it’s only fitting!

Eat This: Easy Vegetable Couscous w/Zucchini & Tomato. I love refreshing, Mediterranean-inspired bowls and this one takes full advantage of the harvests of Fall!

🪂 Parasailing 🪂

Flying through the sky, pulled by a boat, over water. What could be more fun?! That is until you look down and realize the water is filled with jellyfish 🪼 and you spend the majority of the time hoping and praying the driver doesn’t drop you into the water for a swim! (True story about the 1 and only time I, Jill, went parasailing.)

If you want a fun, exhilarating, eye-opening experience, without the jellyfish AND at no cost to you, check out Capitalize.

They put in the work to find any of your forgotten 401(k)’s from previous employees and help you roll them over into an IRA of your choosing, for FREE!
