Welcome my world wide web wizards! 🧙
You probably already know this, being in your inbox and all, but Labor Day sales have started. Before we talk about the internet, CNET’s Labor Day Sales Guide tells you where to find the deals without tempting you with a bunch of “add to cart” buttons.
TLDR: Mattresses, tech, and bedding reign supreme.
Want to see other products on sale? GQ has a long list of Labor Deals in other categories but note that these deals are probably not the best deals of the year.
Planning on a home project this weekend? Get $5 off $50 at Home Depot by signing up for their newsletter and Lowes has up to 75% off patio furniture.
Ok, while the internet is worth every penny for bringing this newsletter to your inbox 😇, chances are you are paying anywhere from $37-$80 per month for internet access and probably wondering if you could get that number lower.
The answer is:
Here are a few things to try to decrease your monthly internet expenses!
1. Shop around for the best deal. 💲 Compare prices and packages offered by different internet service providers (ISPs) in your area. Look for promotional offers, discounts, or bundle packages that may help you save money.
I (Jill) was able to decrease my internet bill by about $15/month AND received the $200 gift card they were offering through a promotional mailer. It’s worth a call!
2. Negotiate. 🤝🏻 Call up your current internet provider and ask about any available discounts or promotions. Often, they are willing to offer better deals to retain customers. Come to the call prepared and have a script ready.
3. Consider leveling down. 👨🏽💻 I know this seems like the opposite direction of most advice, but it’s possible you don’t need as much speed if you’re not engaging in bandwidth-intensive activities like HD video streaming or online gaming.
So evaluate your internet usage patterns and see if you can downgrade to a lower speed tier.
4. Let someone else pay for it. 💰 Do you work from home? Many states have laws about reimbursing employees for work-related expenses. Ask your employer if they offer home office stipends or if they will cover your internet bill (and any other work-related expense).
This is something employers would have to provide if you worked at the office, so most will pay for your internet in a home office situation. Of course, if you own your own business, remember that your internet is a business expense and therefore a tax write-off.
5. Use public Wi-Fi. 📶 You could challenge yourself to go sans internet altogether while taking advantage of free public Wi-Fi whenever possible. Many cafes, libraries, and public spaces offer free internet access, which can help reduce your data consumption, save you money, and introduce you to a different way of life.
There are some strong advocates out there for this internet-free home lifestyle with some compelling arguments. :)
