Hey there my fall friends!

We’ve floated through another month which means it’s time for one of my favorite events… a date with our money. 💖

As we close out September, let’s schedule an hour to sit with our finances, make a spending plan, and get started on the Big Money Move for the month.

While I wish I could be there with you with a fun bevie and some hype music, I’ve compiled everything you need to get started.

💸💸💸
What to Include in October’s Spending Plan

🍂 Halloween + Fall Activities. If you don’t have your costume yet, now’s the time to start gathering! We recommend the thrift store or better yet your own closet! Also, be sure to start grabbing candy on your next few grocery trips and consider what other paid activities you hope to take part in.

🏈 School Photos. If you’ve got kids in school you know the drill, whether they need a last-minute outfit, uniform, haircut, shoes, registration, or if you just want to order ALL the pics of that cutie, this is a definite spending line item.

🧣 Seasonal Clothing (hello sweata weatha 👋). Take a peek at your winter clothing and make sure you’re all set for the cooler months. Make a list of what you need to purchase over the next month and add it to the spending plan.

💸💸💸
October’s Big Money Move

Check your credit score & report. You know how much a poor credit score can cost you but we just did an episode with our friend Michelle on how your credit score saves you money.

This month, head to AnnualCreditReport.com to see your credit score and report from all three major bureaus for free. If everything looks good then you’re done! If something looks amiss set aside time to take care of it by the end of the month.

💸💸💸
What’s on Sale?

🥩 Grills. Summer is over but tailgating season is still in full swing so October tends to be a good month for grill deals.

🪴 Plants. If you enjoy gardening, get ready to stock up on perennial plants. In October, many nurseries and home improvement stores try to clear out inventory of these items. Perennials don't need replanting each year, making them fairly low maintenance as far as plants go. If you want flowers for spring, consider looking for bulbs now. You can plant them before temperatures really drop and they'll bloom when winter is over.

🏷️ Early Black Friday deals. October 10-11 are Prime Big Deal Day and all the big box stores jump on the bandwagon. If you need something urgently, then look for deals here but remember Black Friday is around the corner and will likely have better deals.

💸💸💸
What to Cook

As per usual, we are basing our meal plan around seasonal fruits and veggies

Tuesday, we released EP 340 which was a rerun of 190 on How to Prepare For a No-Spend Challenge (The Secret to Sticking to It!). This is a perfect one to cue up if you have big goals of having some leftover cash for the holidays!

Also, check out Friday’s episode, Why You Shouldn’t Sleep on Estate Sales. I, Jill, just hosted an estate sale for my parents and have lots of insight on what to expect and how you can leverage these sales this Fall!

Tune in wherever you get podcasts and let us know what you thought of the episode over on our latest Instagram post!

🍂 Pumpkins 🍂

Fall’s favorite decor. While I can’t say I’m a fan of pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkins really are the GOAT of this season. They last forever, they’re inexpensive (relatively), easy to grow (for most), they provide fun activities (picking, carving) AND you can eat them!! What versatility! 👌

Speaking of GOATS, high-yield savings accounts (HYSA) are kinda like the pumpkins of personal finance. They look good on your doorstep (a.k.a. your banking portfolio) and earn you interest while staying accessible to you.

Open your own HYSA at CIT with no monthly minimum balance and earn 4.65% APY on your money!**
