June Budget Toolkit

05/29/26 - Friday

Hey friend,

June is one of those months that feels chill…
…but your bank account might disagree 😅

Between summer plans, events, and kids being home more, spending can quietly ramp up.

So let’s get ahead of it.

🎧 Today’s episode: What to Budget For in June

We took everyone’s favorite Budget Toolkit and turned it into a full episode!

We’ve taken everything you love about the Budget Toolkit and given a little insight into it in typical Frugal Friends fashion. But if you prefer to read, you won’t miss anything here.

💰 What to include in June’s spending plan

Amazon has moved Prime Day up to June this year, presumably to edge out competition from other retailers who planned to run their sales in tandem in June.

Regardless, if you are planning on partaking, set a budget and stick to it.

Ultimately, we think Prime Day is a scam, and you should cancel Amazon Prime altogether, but we understand there are some deals to be be found.

Some other budget items to consider:

  • Summer camp (hello, expensive childcare season)

  • Father’s Day gifts and celebrations

  • Graduations (gifts, parties, travel)

  • Summer vacations and travel

  • Higher utility bills (AC is working overtime)

  • Summer weddings

  • Extra snacks because kids are home and suddenly always hungry

🛍️ What’s on Sale (and how to think about it)

  • Tools, grills, and home improvement items

  • Spring clothing on clearance

  • Cookware and kitchen items (wedding season = registry season)

But here’s your friendly reminder: A sale is not a signal to buy. It’s a signal that other people are buying.

Which makes it a great time to check:

  • Facebook Marketplace

  • Buy Nothing groups

  • Thrift stores

Let someone else take the depreciation hit 👏

🚨 What NOT to buy this month

Hold off on:

  • High-end fashion (better deals in July)

  • Grills and patio furniture (cheapest later in summer)

👩🏻‍🍳 What to Cook in June

Lean into what’s in season:

🍒 Fruits: cherries, berries, peaches, watermelon

🌽 Veggies: corn on the cob, summer squash, bell peppers

Plus:

🍨 National dairy month deals (ice cream, yogurt, cream cheese)
🥗 BBQ staples like burgers, hot dogs, and potato salad

Seasonal eating = better prices + better taste.
Win-win.

💡 This Month’s Money Move: Income Check-In

We talk a lot about saving money…
…but sometimes the best move is making more.

Here’s your June reset:

1. Benchmark your income

Check your pay against:

  • Similar roles and experience

  • Your location or remote market rate

  • Industry averages

Use tools like Glassdoor, PayScale, Levels.fyi. Even if you think your pay is standard, you should still do this annually to be 100% sure and track your field for income decline (in which case it may be time to pivot careers altogether).

2. Gather your receipts (not the spending kind)

If you’re underpaid (statistically… you probably are):

Write down:

  • Wins from the past 6 to 12 months

  • Measurable impact (revenue, growth, savings)

  • New responsibilities

Then ask: “Could I justify a 10 to 20 percent raise?”
If yes, it’s either meeting time and/or networking time.

3. Find your “missed money”

This one’s big.

Look for:

  • 401(k) match you’re not maxing

  • Bonuses you’re close to qualifying for

  • Tuition reimbursement

  • HSA or FSA contributions

  • Unused PTO or overtime

This can easily add up to $1,000 to $5,000+ per year

No new job required.

4. Set a 6-month income plan

Skip vague goals like:
❌ “I want to make more money”

Try:
“Attend one networking event each month”
✅ “Apply to 3 higher-paying roles per week”
✅ “Schedule a raise conversation this quarter”

Clarity creates momentum.

🧾 Make Budgeting Easier

If you want to make budgeting as simple as possible, we love Monarch Money. **

Monarch helps you:

  • See all your accounts in one place

  • Track spending in real time

  • Set goals and actually follow through

  • Collaborate with a partner or family

And when you use code FRUGAL you’ll get 50% off your first year!

If you want a really simple way to stay ahead of months like this without another app, our 2026 Spending Planner is exactly what you need.

It helps you:

  • Map out expected expenses before the month starts

  • Track spending without overcomplicating it

  • See where your money is going at a glance

  • Stay flexible without feeling out of control

It’s not about restriction.
It’s about awareness.

June isn’t expensive because you’re doing something wrong.

It’s expensive because life is happening.

When you plan for it, you get to enjoy it without the stress.

And that’s kind of the whole point.

Warmest,
Jen & Jill
