July Budget Toolkit
06/26/26 - Friday

Hey friends,
July is one of those months where spending sneaks up on you.
It starts with a cookout… turns into a long weekend… and suddenly you’ve spent $200 on “just a few things.”
So instead of reacting, let’s plan for it.
🎧 On the Pod: What to Budget for in July
🎆 What to Budget For
4th of July (America’s 250th birthday!)
BBQs, parties, and hosting costs
Fireworks, decorations, alcohol
This is one of the easiest holidays to underestimate. It feels casual… until you’re Venmo-ing your fifth “small contribution.”
Summer travel
You’ve already paid for flights and lodging, but the real damage happens during the trip.
Add extra to your gas budget this month and be aware of “memory spending”. Remember that you can’t actually buy memories. You can buy things and experiences that might create them, but that doesn’t make every purchase meaningful.
Less structure = more spending
School’s out, routines are off, and suddenly convenience becomes the default. More takeout, more last-minute plans, more “this will make the day easier” spending. It’s not bad, you just have to plan for it!
🔥 What’s On Sale in July
🛋️ 4th of July sales: Furniture, mattresses, appliances (Yes, this is actually one of the best times to buy big home items. Even better than Black Friday in some cases.)
📚 School supplies: If you start school in August, now’s the window… but don’t start too early. Spending will expand to fill whatever shopping window you give it. Find out if your state has a tax-free week for school supplies and limit your shopping to that week.
🚫 What to Skip This Month
Spending!
→ With Prime Day and comparable sales moved to June and most back-to-school shopping starting in August, we think July could be a great month for a no-spend challenge. It won’t be a good month for everyone, but if most of your summer travel happened in June, then this could be the kick you need to get the second half of the year started off right!
Patio furniture, grills, outdoor gear
→ better clearance in August and September
Lawn equipment
→ wait until late August
July has good sales, but not for everything.
🍑 What to Cook
🍓 Fruits in season: Berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries), watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, plums, cherries
🌽 Vegetables in season: Corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, peppers
Try this:
This is peak “eat well for less” season. Take advantage of it!
💳 This Month’s Money Move: Credit + Identity Check
This one isn’t flashy, but it’s high impact.
Step 1: Check your credit reports (free)
Go to AnnualCreditReport.com and pull reports from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion
Look for:
Accounts you don’t recognize
Incorrect balances or late payments
You’re not checking your score. You’re checking for errors and fraud.
Step 2: Scan for identity leaks
Search your email for: “password reset,” “verification code,” “new login”
Check if your data’s been exposed using Have I Been Pwned and review saved payment methods across apps and sites. Most identity theft starts with old, forgotten accounts.
Step 3: Lock it down
Turn on 2-factor authentication everywhere, freeze your credit with all 3 bureaus (free and reversible), and set up transaction alerts on your accounts
It’s way easier to prevent fraud than to fix it.
🔐 Stay Protected Year-Round
If this all feels like too much or you want year-round monitoring, Aura** is a solid option.
Aura tracks your credit, bank accounts, and personal data in real time, alerts you to suspicious activity, and even includes identity theft insurance.
So instead of checking once a year, you can stay protected all year. And its family plan has amazing child safety features every parent is gonna want to check out. Especially if your child plays games online.
Enjoy the rest of summer, plan for what matters, and give your future self a little breathing room.
Warmest,
Jen & Jill
