Frugal tips from the great depression

06/30/26 - Tuesday

Hey friends,

When money gets tight, we feel like we need a complicated system to fix it.

But some of the most effective frugal habits don’t come from apps, spreadsheets, or optimization hacks.

They came from people who simply had to make do with less.

And they figured it out.

In this week’s episode, we’re looking at the practical, no-nonsense ways people lived during the Great Depression and what still works today.

🎧 On the Pod: Frugal Living Tips From The Great Depression

We’re talking about:

  • The everyday habits that helped families stretch every dollar

  • Why resourcefulness beats restriction every time

  • How to adopt these practices without feeling like you’re depriving yourself

Because frugality isn’t about doing without. It’s about making the most of what you have.

💡 What Still Works Today

Use what you have first. Before buying something new, ask: “Do I already have something that could work?” Not perfectly. Just well enough.

Waste less, period. Food, time, money, energy. It all adds up. A lot of “saving money” is just not letting things go to waste in the first place.

Get creative instead of spending. Fix it. Repurpose it. Borrow it. Wait on it. Constraints don’t kill creativity. They built it.

Community > convenience. People relied on each other more. Sharing, trading, helping. It’s not outdated, it’s underused.

🔄 Try This This Week

Pick one area where you usually default to convenience spending and pause.

Not forever. Just long enough to ask: “Is there another way to solve this?”

You might still spend the money. But now it’s a choice, not a reflex.

❤️ A Simple Way to Help Others

One thing that stands out from that era is how much people showed up for each other.

And that still matters.

If you’re in a position to give, we’d love for you to join us in supporting our fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Ronald McDonald House helps families stay close to their children during medical care, providing housing and support during some of the hardest moments of their lives. This January, Jen is running the Disney World Marathon in support of RMHC.

It’s practical help, when it’s needed most.

Even a small contribution can make a real difference. And for every donation of $25 we’ll send you a “Frugal not Cheap” tote bag! Just reply to this email with your confirmation and address.

Frugal isn’t about going backwards.

It’s about keeping what works and letting go of what doesn’t.

Warmest 🎶
