Avoid these 3 Summer money traps
05/23/25 - Friday

Hello Sunshine ☀️
Summer can get expensive. But it’s even more expensive when influencers and marketers tell us that in order to make good memories, we have to spend money!
We’re here to tell you it’s not true! AND give permission to make different (but still fun!) choices in our most recent podcast episode “Deinfluence Summer.”
The best part? It’s on YouTube!
Go subscribe to the channel, then watch us dissect the ways social media is pushing us to spend unnecessarily on Summer and what to do instead!
If you like what we’re doing here, could you help make Jen’s dreams come true by nominating us “best podcast” for Best of the Bay?
She’s always wanted to win an award. 😇
🏝️Top 3 Summer Money Traps And How to Avoid Them
1. Vacations. It seems like everywhere we look, people are going on luxurious trips, and even claiming that they’re affordable!
Which can make us believe that private pool-side cabanas are what budget-friendly travel looks like.
Which only leaves us feeling disheartened when we can’t do the same thing, OR overextended when we do try to have the picture-perfect trip.
INSTEAD: This Summer, be on the lookout for free, fun, local events, plan a staycation, or host a backyard picnic.
2. Viral Trends. We all want belonging, and sometimes the fear of missing out is stronger than our resolve to consume less.
From reusable cups to beaded bags from TJMaxx (yes, it’s a thing - check out our video for context), if we’re exposed to the items enough it can start to feel like ‘everyone has this - I must need it too!’
INSTEAD: Curate your social media by following accounts that get you closer to your goals, and leave you feeling good about yourself. And find ways to connect with the people you love and enjoy most.
3. Flash Sales. Everybody has a sale going and even influencers will try to instill a sense of urgency with phrases like ‘last chance’, ‘ends tonight’, ‘only 48 hours left’ which causes us to bypass intentional spending and opt for reactive spending.
INSTEAD: When you see something you want to buy, put it on a wishlist in your notes app, come back to it 24-48 hours later. If you still want it, then it’s worth spending the money (even if the sale is over!)
