A Top Overlooked Aspect of Money Management
12/06/24 - Friday
Goooood morning!
Have you ever had a particularly lucky streak financially?
An “I just found five dollars in the parking lot, successfully renegotiated my interest rate, and my side hustle made bank” kind of season?
Perhaps it’s the opposite - maybe life smacked you with a flat tire and a kid that needs braces all at the same time.
We all experience life’s ups & downs, and managing our finances is a necessary task to do alongside those times, rather than an afterthought once the dust settles.
But how CAN we best approach our money during both the good and the tough seasons of life?
Jen & Jill cover this topic extensively in their book: Buy What You Love Without Going Broke. It’s a realistic deep dive into how your values and life seasons impact your finances, and the steps you can take to navigate through it.
📢 The book doesn’t come out until January 7th, so until then, we’ve come up with some key questions to ask yourself about your finances!
🔆 How to Determine Your Season
🤔 First, consider how you would define your season. What does your family situation look like? Where do you live? How old are you? What does your career look like?
These questions help determine the context you’re in which will help determine where your money is best spent.
📝 Next, ask yourself, what is my biggest priority in this time of my life?
Is it spending more time with family? Is it investing in your education? Is it pursuing a job you love?
Knowing what you’re after now can help clear the clutter of everyone else’s goals or ideas of what you ‘should’ do and help you focus more on the steps you need to take to experience the life you want.
💡 Then, identify ONE way you can align your money and spending decisions to support your priorities in this season (ideally so you feel even better about your money in the following season!)
A few examples would include:
Paying down debt. Even if it means putting other financial goals on the back-burner, so that you free up more money for the long-term. ✅
Eating at home more so that you can invest in an online class to help boost your resume. 👩🏻💻
OR paying for convenience like pre-chopped veggies or even hiring a house cleaner to free up your time to tackle the projects only YOU can do. 🧼
Lastly, it’s important to look toward the future. What’s coming next? Are you planning a wedding, or having your first child? Are you looking toward retirement?
➡️ Think of ways you can leverage your money now to provide relief to your future self. ✨
And be patient with yourself! It doesn’t all happen at once, and most of us can’t achieve ALL our financial goals simultaneously. It’s a journey and we’re here for you!
