Happy Friday!

Almost eight years ago, my (Jen) personal finance journey started.

My husband and I decided to pay off $78,000 💸💸💸 of student loans because I was told debt is the enemy.

What resulted from that mindset grew into a toxic relationship with money.

Because if debt is the enemy, whatever doesn’t help you get out of debt is the enemy by proxy.

That meant spending on anything non-essential became the enemy (☕👙🍹!!!).

But even though I wasn’t “supposed to” be spending money, I couldn’t get around the fact that everything cost money.

Rent, gas, groceries, furniture, the rock I had to hide under to avoid the temptation to spend money.

So how can spending be both the enemy and essential to living?

It took years of deconstruction but I found freedom when I realized spending is a skill, just like cooking or communication, that you can learn and improve as you practice.

You might be thinking, “of course, I’m good at spending, I spend everything I make and more!”

But learning the skill of anything comes with mastering the nuance. Knowing when to say ‘yes’, when to say ‘no’, and when to get creative to make a transaction work.

When you learn the nuances, you can buy what you love and not feel like you’re doing something bad when you do it.

This week we’re sharing an interview we did at our Frugal Living Summit in 2021. Sahirenys Pierce shares Simple Saving Strategies using the High-5 Banking Method. If you’re unsure how many bank accounts to have this will answer your question!
